A total of 92,000 Testaments were distributed by an international team of Gideons in Jogjakarta and the surrounding towns during March 2015. The blitz was originally planned for Jayapura, but due to strict visa requirements for West Papua, the location was changed to Jogjakarta. The original plan was a blessing, as the local Gideons went ahead and distributed 39,000 Testaments in Jayapura.
Official statistics state that only 11% of the population of Indonesia are Christian.
The team found that it was difficult to distribute Bibles to hospitals and hotels although they made some placements with God’s grace. However, distributions were possible at a large number of schools and the response from the students was amazing.
One Gideon noted that during his visit to the schools, he didn’t see a single child with an iPhone (the per capita income in Indonesia is around $300 per month). The children only had access to the Bible through the hard copy Testaments that the Gideons distributed.
One member of the team visited a University and made a distribution of 100 bi-lingual Testaments to students studying Christian theology. He said that the joy and gratitude of the theology students even exceeded the gratitude of the school children.
The Australian Gideon who participated said: “one point that has really made an impression on me is the value of Australian funds sent for international Scriptures. It was great to see boxes of Testaments constantly appearing for each class of children. However, without funding these Testaments would not have been available and these children would not have been able to receive a copy of God’s word. An amount of only 50 Australian dollars funded Testaments for a class of 30 children, which was an amazing investment in the lives of these grateful children”.
Praise God for His faithfulness!
